Syd Smith has generously offered to offer casting instruction for experienced HOSSFLY members. Syd is an FFF Certified Casting Instructor and he's an excellent teacher. The sessions will begin in
March and will focus on distance casting skills. The location has not been determined. Remember, we go on Daylight Savings
Time on March 13th so additional daylight time after work is only six weeks away.
Interested members should contact
until February 22 when
returns from fishing in Belize.
For folks interested in fly casting DVDs, Syd recommends these:

How Weather Affects the Fishing
Jan 19, 2011 at 03:56 PM
Dennis Craig
I received an email from Dwight
Yoder at the Bay Area Fly Fishers Club that they have scheduled Jason Smith,
Chief Meteorologist at Fox Ch 10 here in Mobile, to speak on how weather
affects fishing. Jason gave this presentation to the Alabama Coastal Fishing
Assn last year (100+ members) and many of the members there said it was the
best presentation that they had ever heard. Jason will touch on how
temperature, winds, barometric pressure, fronts, daylight hours and other
factors influence the feeding pattern of fish in our area. If you have
seen his show "Jason Smith Outdoors" on TV at 10 am on Sundays, you
know that he is knowledgeable in all types of fishing.
He will be giving that presentation at their next club meeting on February 8
(meeting are the 2nd Tuesday of the month) held at Dreamland Barbecue on Old
Shell Rd (between Dauphin St and Springhill Ave) and the I-65 East Service
Rd. The groups gathers at 5:30 for ribs and chicken and the meeting gets
going a little after 6pm. Since Jason does the weather on air from
5-6pm, I'd guess that his presentation will be after the business meeting
agenda.
Dwight has asked me let all HOSSFLY members know that they are invited to
attend the presentation. So if you want to learn a lot about how you will
make your fishing more productive, please join me at their February meeting.
Thank you Dwight!
HOSSFLY Tarpon Grant Press Release
Oct 18, 2010 at 07:23 AM
The following is the text of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory's press release on the HOSSFLY tarpon grant. You can view the press release on the University of Southern Mississippi's web site here.
Don
Tom Herrington, founding member of the Historic Ocean Springs Saltwater
Flyfishing Club (HOSSFLY), recently led a “fly-tying” auction to raise
money in support of Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s (GCRL) tarpon
research project.
“This donation, totaling $1,000 is of tremendous importance as we
expand our field research efforts to describe the distribution and
habitat preferences of young tarpon in Mississippi coastal waters,” said
Jim Franks, GCRL fisheries biologist. “We are extremely grateful to
have HOSSFLY as a partner in tarpon research.”
For the past four years, Franks and GCRL colleague Paul Grammer have
been documenting the occurrence and distribution of the juvenile tarpon
in local waters, specifically bayous and tidal sloughs.
“Tarpon is considered by most flyfishers as a premier sport fish in the
Gulf of Mexico,” said Herrington. “HOSSFLY is proud to support this
important, new research.”
Based on GCRL research, and anecdotal information, it appears that the
abundance of juvenile tarpon in local waters has increased substantially
in recent years. This is an indication that Mississippi coastal waters
and marshlands may serve as a critical nursery habitat for young
tarpon.
“We have collected numerous specimens of juvenile tarpon,” said
Franks, “some as small as two inches in length. The majority of the
young fish were tagged and released. A few local sport fishers have
reported to us their catches of young tarpon weighing up to 15 pounds,
and we’ve actually examined a few of those specimens.”
Franks encourages anyone who catches young tarpon, particularly a
tagged tarpon, to report the catch by calling his lab at 228.872.4202.
Additional funding for this research is provided through a grant from
the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.
GCRL Acknowledges Tarpon Grant
Oct 18, 2010 at 06:27 AM
Jim Franks, senior fisheries scientist at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, sent the following letter to HOSSFLY expressing his appreciation for HOSSFLY's $1000 grant to support tarpon research at the Lab. Jim recently reported that his team had collected a number of juvenile tarpon in two locations in Jackson County. He was hopeful that the BP oil spill had not adversely affected local tarpon.
Join Mississippi Power and other local businesses in the2010 Renew our Rivers program. One of the four days of the effort will focus on Deer Island. Come out and volunteer on Thursday, October 14th, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. The multi-day effort in 2009 removed 17 tons of trash and debris from our waters.Details are contained in this pdf flyer. (4.3 mb file, be patient.)
Bring your flyrod and stick around to fish after the clean-up work is done.
